While most of you know me as a landscape and portrait photographer, I’m also a full-time physician, a scientist at heart. Although I do my best to stay clear of political commentary in my life as an artist, I can’t help but mention the effects of rising air temperature that I observed first-hand during my adventure in Antarctica. Between 1970 and 2020, the average summer temperatures in Antarctica rose by 5 degrees Fahrenheit (3 degrees Celsius). Consequently, floating ice shelves are melting rapidly, and many penguin colonies are shrinking, and in some cases disappearing altogether. One morning, we were out in our Zodiac inflatable and came across these four Magellanic penguins seemingly marching lockstep atop this floating iceberg. The juxtaposition of the tiny penguins contrasted sharply with the enormous block of ice beneath them and, once again, with the large ice shelf from which it had broken off. The light couldn’t have been more perfect as the sun’s rays were cutting diagonally across my composition and intensifying the beautiful blue hue reflecting off the ice. I knew the moment was fleeting so I grabbed the shot. I hope that by sharing this photo, we will all be just a little more cognizant of the fragility of our environment.
