The air was calm and the overcast skies created a beautiful, soft light. I opted for a long exposure to blur the water’s surface and add to the composition’s mood. HARVGREENBERG@GMAIL.COM BEHIND THE SCENE: After spending nearly a week shooting in Kyoto’s densely populated urban center, it was time to head back to nature and explore the tranquil shores of Lake Biwa. The lake is the largest in Japan so it took quite some time to scout out just the right location. I fell in love with the juxtaposition of the lake’s calm waters against the towering mountains in the distance and the peninsula of trees flanking on the left. Once the perfect perspective had been found, it was now just a waiting game for Mother Nature to offer up a little help in the sky. There was nearly two feet of snow on the ground and nothing but blue skies above. Blue skies make great postcards, but they leave much to be desired in terms of character and mood. Lucky for me, a storm was quickly moving in from the east and with it, a bevy of textured clouds began to fill the sky. I opted for a long exposure which both calms the water’s surface and creates a more dynamic look in the sky. As I clicked the shutter on my camera, it felt like I had captured a very special Zen moment in time. Throughout the week I saw some absolutely gorgeous fall foliage, but I must say I was particularly captivated by this waterfall. I love how it stretches so high into the mountains that it seemingly touches the sky. Day after day I kept coming back, waiting for softer light. When the light was just right, I chose a long exposure technique to blur the water, giving the composition that mystical feeling. There was a slight chill in the air and the forest had that gentle smell that only comes after a rain. Just a perfect day that I will always remember.
