Following flights to Buenos Aires and then Ushuaia, Argentina, we boarded a small boat to begin our journey to the continent. As every intrepid Antarctica adventurer knows, in order to reach the continent, you’ll need to cross the Drake Passage. Some of the planet’s roughest seas are found there and having to cross it twice made for double the fun. During our journey, we encountered 30’ seas and 60 mph winds for two days. Despite the arduous journey, upon arrival we were greeted with the most spectacular land and seascapes I’ve ever seen. Mystic Mountain was photographed on Livingstone Island in Antarctica. I spent hours studying the light at the lake, really wanting to feel the spirit of the land. Compositionally, the lone tree had to take center stage while the stunning Southern Alps framed the scene. As I set up the shot, clouds moved swiftly overhead. I waited for just the right moment when the layered appearance of the clouds best reflected the rolling peaks and valleys of the Alps. I opted for a long exposure to best capture the available light and to create a dreamy look to the lake’s surface. I hope that by sharing this moment, you too will find inspiration from New Zealand’s magical tree.
