BEHIND THE SCENE: I’ve walked Venice Beach for decades, but rarely have I stumbled across such a Zen moment as I observed during the Summer of 2020. While in the midst of a global pandemic, a brutal race for the White House and a devastating economic crisis, I found this woman standing ankle deep in water, gazing out over the Pacific Ocean. The cleansing smell of the ocean filled the air and the rhythmic sounds of the waves only added to the serenity of the moment. Not wanting to disturb her special moment, I waited just a few seconds for a flock of birds to fly into the frame and took the shot. I can only hope my photo somehow captured a hint of the calmness she seemed to experience that evening in Venice. As the family gradually approached the surf, I could only imagine the joy and connection felt by all. My position on the pier gave me the perfect vantage point to capture this very special moment in time.
