St. Marks Basilica at the far end of the square is also one of Venice’s most iconic landmarks. For these reasons and because of their important historical significance, I wanted this composition to emphasize both the beauty and strength of character of both the piazza and the church. Given the popularity of the site amongst tourists and residents alike, I had to shoot in the pre-dawn hours in order to beat the immense crowds. The dim light and the long exposure technique created the soft tonality in the sky while simultaneously picking up the exquisite architectural details of the building facades. Shooting through the archways also adds to the texture of the composition.
