PHANTOM I ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: I’ve always been totally mesmerized by the textures and curves of Antelope Canyon. The light, shadows and colors would change throughout the day, conjuring up a veritable kaleidoscope of nature. For those unfamiliar, Antelope is a slot canyon in Arizona that was formed by flash floods occurring during repeated monsoon rains. As the water and sand rushed into the canyon, over time passageways were created, through erosion and smoothing, eventually forming these amazing flowing shapes in the rock. I only had one day to shoot the canyon so I had precious little time to get it right. Patiently I waited until the cascading diffused light began to stream into the canyon around mid-day. As the sun’s rays reflected off the loose sand, the ghost-like shaft of light made for both a mysterious and simultaneously breathtaking composition. CREATION ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: While hiking in Patagonia one summer, I came upon this clearing and was completely awestruck by the view. There had been a torrential downpour earlier in the day and as the skies began to clear, huge, cumulus clouds gathered overhead. I snapped a few photos just to capture the moment, but thought the real magic would happen after the sun went down. The clouds began to clear as the evening went on and soon the sky was filled with a veritable sea of stars. The moon was full and its light falling upon the mountains was truly breathtaking. INFINITY ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: Patterns are to photography what rhythm is to music. Patterns give us a sense of order in what may otherwise seem like chaos. If you repeat something once or twice it becomes more interesting. If you repeat something many more times, it becomes a pattern and begins to take on a life of its own. Without the limitation of just a single focal point, repetition helps your eye move from point to point, exploring more of the image. At the Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi, the repeating archways, columns and the shadows they cast takes this concept to an extreme as your eye travels further and further down the tunneled corridor. SANTORINI SPIRIT ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: Santorini should be considered the supermodel of the Greek islands. Head turning architecture, soaring cliffs and majestic sunsets are everywhere. One beautiful summer day I was out for an early evening stroll. It had been raining, but the clouds were beginning to clear. As the sun began to fall towards the horizon, the sky lit up with some of the most spectacular colors mother-nature had ever conjured up. This particular composition held special appeal. The shape of the sea-drowned caldera combined with a landscape dotted with blue and white domed buildings draws your eyes towards the setting sun. PEACE & HARMONY ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: Peace and Harmony is a gentle reminder to steal ourselves away for a quiet moment to gather ones thoughts and enjoy the world around us. Late one afternoon, while hiking up in the Pacific Northwest, I came upon this tranquil setting. I thought the symmetry of the pier on this pristine lake would make for the perfect composition. As the sun began to fall towads the horizon, a beautiful soft light touched the lake and pier. Just before I clicked my camera’s shutter, one of the locals wandered down the pier and paused for a few seconds. I was hoping beyond hope that he would turn around and make a quick exit so as to not ruin my photograph. No such luck. But when he took a seat at the far end, that’s when the composition’s magic truly grabbed me. I opted for a long exposure in order to give both the skies and lake a painterly quality. When it all came together, I knew I had captured a truly zen moment in time. DOWNTOWN REFLECTIONS ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: One of the greatest challenges of shooting in downtown Los Angeles is finding the perfect perspective from which to capture the true soul of this amazing city. Patience, passion and perseverance are key. After spending days upon days marching from one city block to the next, I came up this towering skyscraper and this magical reflection of the downtown skyline. I had to work fast to capture the moment. Black and white was a conscious choice as it contributes to the mood. VISIBLE ORDER ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: Light. Space. Structure. Louis Kahn, the architect of the Salk Institute used these basic elements to create one of the world’s most masterful pieces of architecture. His minimalist design uses geometrical shapes to create a weightless structure. Kahn believed that architecture should serve the humanistic needs of the people and the community. The space and structure he created along with inspiration provided by Jonas Salk, is just as much a haven for cutting edge science as it is for meditation and personal reflection. It is my sincere hope that I was able to capture this Zen quality in my photograph. THE EASTERN I ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: The Eastern Columbia building is one of the world’s most famous Art Deco landmarks. Located in the Broadway Theater District of Downtown Los Angeles this masterful piece of architecture was designed by Claud Beelman and opened in 1930. It climbs 264 feet into the sky and cost a cool $1.25 million to build. Originally it served as a clothing and furniture store, but was converted to condominiums in 2006. Johnny Depp was one of its most famous residents. Multiple Hollywood movie and TV shows were filmed here including the 1985 pilot for the iconic series Moonlighting starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis. It’s rare to get an obstructed look at the trademark four-sided clock tower, but on this day I was granted special permission. Timing was everything. Strong winds were blowing across downtown and there was just the perfect mix of clouds overhead. The sky was quickly darkening with a storm moving in from the east. I hurried to set-up my gear and then opted for a long exposure to create a feeling of movement in the sky. I love the three-dimensional quality of this image. You can also appreciate how the composition juxtaposes LA’s more classical architecture on the right, more contemporary skyscrapers on the left and in-between is the fabulous Eastern building. HEAVENLY COAST ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: The stunning landscapes of Big Sur have always kept me completely mesmerized. Frequently touristed and equally often photographed, I wanted to find a unique perspective from which to capture the beauty of one of my favorite places on earth. This location was phenomenal during the day time, but became positively surreal after sunset. I timed my shoot to coincide with a full moon and used a long exposure to best capture such an epic landscape. WHERE TIME STANDS STILL ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: Chocolate croissant and a cup of steaming coffee in hand, I set out early one morning for a walk through the streets of Paris. In my mind there are few urban centers that can compare with the charm and character of Paris. Architectural masterpieces can be found around nearly every corner. It had rained the evening before, so the air was crisp and fresh. Just a few billowy clouds dotted the morning sky. As I passed beneath this bridge, I became immediately captivated by the curved arch perfectly framing the river and the cobblestone path that served as a leading line drawing your eyes toward infinity. SERENITY ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: A few years ago I was on an early morning hike up in the Mt. Hood region of Oregon. I had just been hiking a short-ways along the trail when I came upon a clearing where this classic dory was moored. I love the gentle curves of the dory and its reflection in the water. The early morning mist coming off of the lake, nearly obscuring the ridgeline of trees in the distance, only adds to the calming mood of the composition. After snapping a few photos, I found a perfect resting spot and poured myself a hot cup of coffee and enjoyed the moment. Hope you’ll do the same. THE CALM BEFORE THE STORM ****************************** BEHIND THE SCENE: Late one afternoon, while doing some long exposure photography, an epic supercell like no other I’ve seen, slowly approached. The physical structure was mind-blowing.
