"Remembrance"
Rwanda

In the tragic wake of the 1994 Rwanda genocide, many struggled to reconcile with the horror wrought by the three-month campaign of violence. With their own government sanctioning the deaths of Tutsis and Hutu-moderates, Rwandans found themselves suddenly thrown into a brutal, chaotic world where even their own neighbors could not be trusted. Militias and the Rwandan military roamed the countryside, slaying upwards of 10,000 men, women, and children each day. Eighteen years later, every Rwandan still carries the burden of remembering the tragedy as the nation moves toward an era of peace, recovery, and reconciliation.
